Editorial Review:
Description: In 1872 Lyman and Joseph Bloomingdale opened Bloomingdale Brothers Great East Side Bazaar on 56th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan. Their location was risky, a workingclass neighborhood for from New York's shopping Districts. Like his father, Lyman, Sam was an innovator. He had new ideas on advertising, and on serving their customer's needs. Bloomingdale's had a reputation with it's customers of providing quality goods at reasonable prices. The store continued to grow. The economic downturn in 1929 forced Samuel to join with three other successful store owners to form Federated Department Stores. Bloomingdale's was now part of a company, no longer just a family business. In the late 60s Bloomingdale's recorded a loss of $23Million. The 80s too, were tough of the Bloomingdale name. The store that had become "the" place to shop in New York filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and family legal matters were made public. By 1992 Bloomingdale's set about regaining it's reputation. Certainly Lyman and Joseph Bloomingdale would have never guessed that their modest dry goods store would lead to huge wealth and finally notoriety to the Bloomingdale name.
