Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Pop this on, close your eyes, and you'll be instantly transported back to the Vegas of 1966. The Sands Hotel was still the "class joint" where Sinatra and his Rat Pack buddies partied, held court, and occasionally even performed. This priceless document (Sinatra's first official live album) captures the Chairman of the Board in performance mode, ably supported by conductor-arranger Quincy Jones and Count Basie and his Orchestra. The set list comprises 16 Sinatra classics--including "Come Fly with Me," "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "Angel Eyes"--along with two Basie instrumentals and some seriously un-P.C. stage banter. Essential. --Dan Epstein

Excellent CD....Those were the days when you could understand the
words and the music. You did not get embarassed listening to
this music.

I remember this from the double LP at the Jazz School where I trained. The Basie Bands swings like you can't believe and Sinatra's singing is golden. The thing that made it memorable for me though is his patter. Genuine laugh out loud stuff. Here the CD has been compressed into fewer tracks and a lot of that glorious patter edited out. There is one fantastic monologue though, so short of finding a copy of the double LP this is a good compromise.

Nothing like listening to Sinatra with Count Basie's orchestra performing in front of a live audience. The arrangements and performances were vintage Sinatra. My only complaint was his extended monolog. The great music more than made up for this flat spot.

A truly great album and sadly an end to a great era of music in the US
with his passing and Count Bassie as well. You will love this album.

Let's put it this way, if I was stranded on a deserted island and could have only one CD for the rest of my life, "Sinatra at the Sands" would be it! I've read the other reviews and understand that many (not all, by any means) of his studio albums are artistically superior. But we need to remember that Sinatra broke in singing for live audiences, from the Rustic Cabin to the Meadowlands and everything in between. I also love hearing some of the latest releases on Rhino and other labels, of Sinatra's ... Read More
