Editorial Review:

Amazon.com essential recording:
By general consensus, Herbert von Karajan's first (1963) Beethoven cycle for Deutsche Grammophon is the best of the four (!) that he recorded. The Berlin Philharmonic was in top form, and they had not yet made an artistic fetish out of the bland smoothness that typified the conductor's later recordings of this music (and just about everything else). Karajan's squeaky clean, emotionally cool Beethoven will always be something of an acquired taste, but this set makes the best possible case for it. --David Hurwitz

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A personal comparison of various recordings of Beethoven's symphonies
In this review I will try to compare various complete recordings of Beethoven's nine symphonies plus Carlos Kleiber's CD with Symphonies number 5 and 7 (on DG). Concerning Carlos Kleiber it is easily done: I will advice anybody who appreciates Beethoven (or who think they might appreciate Beethoven) to buy his CD. I doubt you can find better versions of those two works. When I mention Karajan in this review I refer only to his first complete set of Beethoven's symphonies for DG from 1963 with the ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - As all the reviews say, a great collection at a great price
This is a great collection of the symphonies. The 3rd is excellent, but they are all very good. I was also pleased by the overall sound quality - these discs are from the early 60s, but the sound quality is rich, immmediate and vivid, every bit as good as direct-to-digital recording I have. Buy it!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - IMO-The best available comprehensive set of Beethoven's symphonies
In comparison to Furtwangler and those who can be gathered under the "traditional" school of conducting Beethoven--noticeably sweeping/lethargic tempos, Karajan takes a far different path. Karajan still requires large forces but if any generalization could do him justice it would seem to be his perfection of making these symphonies propulsive. Propulsive in the sense that the first movement of the Eroica [3rd symphony] marches out of the speakers and tramples the listener, but it sounds so great that ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A sound investment.
Still the best Beethoven cycle around, Karajan's 1963 run-through of the mighty 9 is also the best value for your music dollar. Sound quality is good (even better on the remastered German import version), and Karajan's dependable, straightforward readings go down smoothly. This was the first cycle recorded and released as a unit, and although other Beethoven cycles may offer better sound, period "authenticity", or some stagey fire in their readings (along with a higher price tag), none offers the listener ... Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not definitive, but good overall cycle
This set's value changes, I think, very much in reference to the desires and tastes of the collector. For fans of Karajan, this will be excellent. For fans of Beethoven, this will probably be good, but certainly not exhaustive. Given its price, the good sound and the generally good performances, this is a really fine collection. Some of the performances, I think, are really excellent (1, 4, 5, 9). It varies as to how serious a Beethoven collector one is. Personally, I feel this set should be augmented by other ...
