Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Michael Curtiz's 1938 Technicolor swashbuckler, with Errol Flynn embodying the title character's mythic heroism and grinning charm, makes good the movies' tradition of action-driven spectacle, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold has magnified that irresistable force as well as become the template for generations of filmmakers emulating its stirring, virtuosic sweep. Like other transplanted European classicists creating the musical backdrop for Hollywood's swiftly evolving screen artistry, Korngold brought meticulous craftsmanship and a deep grounding in centuries of compelling, programmatic symphonic music. Soundtrack buffs know that Korngold, working under tight schedules, raided his own oeuvre to pluck the title hero's vivid main theme, and freely employs anachronistic Viennese waltzes, bombastic marches, and brilliantly scored, intricate orchestrations to animate this medieval legend. Anyone who's ever been thrilled by the irresistible film, or its glorious music, should care less: This is the mother lode for decades of exciting symphonic scores, still felt in John Williams's epochal Star Wars trilogy and Indiana Jones, among dozens of other indelible soundtracks. --Sam Sutherland

I do not own any of the "rehashes" of the Adventures of Robind Hood soundtrack. However, I feel with the soundtrack I do own, I can say that this soundtrack and any others are terrible compared to what I have. I'm sure they're okay since I assume they are professionals, but the soundtrack I'm going to tell you about is the best out there.
This soundtrack is the COMPLETE, ORIGINAL, and OFFICIAL recording of The Adventures of Robin Hood conducted by the composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold. ... Read More

Let's face it. Unless your hankering after the Douglas Fairbanks version in black and white the Errol Flynn version of Robin Hood is the best ever. Period. Sure the Costner version had some nice cinematography and a lovely score but this is where it's at. And this production, by The Utah Symphony Orchestra, seems to capture its' essence. I can't claim to be an aficionado of this score nor can I claim to have ever heard any other version in CD format. But what I can say, from a laymen's perspective, ... Read More

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD complete film score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra is the most magnificent rendition of this remarkable, hauntingly beautiful music. COMPLETE is the key word here as the Moscow Symphony performance has not edited the score for time considerations. John Morgan of Marco Polo Classic Film Music Series has restored bars of music previously taken out, and returned to the original full orchestration the score deserves. Don't buy this old, almost ... The Adventures of Robin Hood set the standard for action/adventure films nearly 70 years, and the score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold equals that high standard. The music so perfectly complements the scenes of the film that it's hard to imagine one without the other. Just hearing "Robin Enters The Great Hall" conjurs up the wonderful image of Errol Flynn confidently striding into the banquet at Nottingham Castle, deer draped over his shoulders and confronting Prince John and his minions. "Ambush in Sherwood" is ... Read More

Still, after almost 25 years, this is the finest recording of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Robin Hood (1938). Produced by George Korngold (the composer's son and legendary film music recording producer) and supebly performed by the Utah Symphony Orchestra under Varujan Kojian, this is a must-have recording.
The CD (itself a reissue of the original 1983 LP) contains about 2/3 of the complete original score, but this does not diminish the importance of this recording in any way. On the contrary, this recording ... Read More
