Product Description: The legendary Zorro, the masked renegade who rode through the night defending justice in late 18th century Spanish California, became in 1957 the topic for Walt Disney Studios' first continuing live-action series and the name of a new American icon. Based on the stories of Johnston McCulley, the legend of Zorro gave birth to the archetypal dual-identity crime fighter, inspiring the creation of such future pop icons as Batman and the Lone Ranger.
This book documents the conception and success of a television legend that has endured for over 40 years. The opening chapter discusses the growth of Zorro, from Johnston McCulley's creation of the character in 1919 to Walt Disney's adaptation of the story and its 1957 ABC premier, and provides an introduction to the star actor behind the mask, Guy Williams. Subsequent chapters reveal behind-the-scenes aspects of the action show, discussing the secrets of Zorro's fencing technique and daredevil stunts and giving insight into the cast, costumes, sets, crew and music of the episodes. Chapters Four through Nine deal exclusively with the content of the first and second seasons as well as the four one hour specials on Walt Disney Presents. Plot summaries are provided for each episode.
The Zorro legend continued to enjoy worldwide popularity long after the filming of the final episode, and concluding chapters discuss the cultural significance of the legend outside of America, particularly in Argentina, where Guy Williams continued his career as the famous pop-culture hero off the screen.

I am amazed at how completely this book covers the 50's Disney Zorro TV show. Each episode is presented in detail: synopsis, author's notes, and behind-the-scenes trivia. Episode summaries are extensive, covering several paragraphs rather than a short sentence or two, as happens in some nostalgia TV show books. There are plenty of photographs of Guy Williams and some of his co-stars. Also presented are the political and artistic aspects of the series. Why was this popular show cancelled after ... Read More

I already own several companion books to different series. Having said that,I must say I was very pleased with this companion book to Walt Disney's Zorro. The author's attention to detail is most impressive-I learned many things about the character and the actor behind him(Guy Williams)that I did not know before. The extensive episode guides are very interesting to read. Much research went into this book and it shows in the final product. If you are not familiar with Walt Disney's Zorro, this book will ... Read More

One of the best TV series next to The Twilight Zone and one of my two favorites. Gerry Dooley did a wonderful job documenting this series. Just like Martin Grams's "The Twilight Zone: Unlocking the Door to a Television Classic" and Sandy Sagala's "Alias Smith and Jones" books, this is the kind of book you can have on your coffee table and as you watch each episode you can turn to the book for insight and trivia.
Guy Williams is THE Zorro and don't expect any imitations. Disney has put the ... Read More
