Product Description:
Writer, actress, and gorgeous stand up comedian: Introducing the Mormon Tina Fey

It's lonely being a Mormon in New York City. So once again, Elna Baker attends the New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance-a virgin in a room full of virgins doing the Macarena. Her Queen Bee costume, which involves a black funnel stuck to her butt for a stinger, isn't attracting the attention she'd anticipated. So once again, Elna is alone at the punch bowl, stocking up on generic Oreos, exactly where you'd expect to find a single Mormon who's also a Big Girl. But loneliness is nothing compared to what happens when she loses eighty pounds. . . . and falls in love with an atheist.

The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance is the memoir of a girl who distresses her family when she chooses NYU over BYU. A girl who's cultivating an oxymoronic identity as a bold, educated, modern, funny, proper, abstinent, religious stand-up comic, equal parts wholesome and hot. As Elna test-drives her identity, she finds herself in the strangest scenarios including selling creepy, overpriced dolls to petulant children at FAO Schwarz and dressing a head wound with a maxi pad while on a date.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Great Book
It's so refreshing to hear a truly unique, honest voice. Women's magazines try to make women sound all alike. They gloss over so many important things that make us special and different - things like religion, values, and morals. You don't have to be Mormon to appreciate this book. I think it's especially interesting and eye-opening for non-Mormons.

I loved Elna's humor. She was definitely endearing and some of her experiences were off the charts hilarious. A lot of the book was heartbreakingly ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A very personal memoir that will touch your heart
I lived in Arizona for many years. There are a LOT of Mormons in Arizona and, sometimes, it feels like they have a secret club which no one else can join. True, of course, but not always appropriate in business situations. So I started reading this book with a little bit of attitude. By the end, Elna Baker had gained my complete support and all of my sympathies. This poor girl has only 3 choices, and none of them are good:

1. Leave the church, causing a rift in her family and cutting her off from ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Funny and engaging
I found this book both funny and engaging. I've seen her standup based on this story on YouTube (which is primarily why I bought the book) but the book somehow made me really care about what was happening to her. The probable cause is that she is so brutally honest -- telling us things that most of us would have tried to cover up. But, they all dovetail together to explain who she is.

Also, a fun read. Quick, funny and I didn't have to think too hard.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Superficially Charming: Elna Needs Therapy
This book left me feeling sorry for Elna Baker and shocked that she thinks she's an informed/cultured Mormon. As a practicing Mormon myself (with a lot in common with Elna in terms of faith questioning and remaining single into my late 20s), I can assure you that her understanding of her faith remains at an elementary level, perhaps due to her low exposure to Mormons growing up. Elna thinks good Mormons don't drink caffeine or even wear lingerie because her mother is a little strange, and she gets thrown by things ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - GIVE IT UP ALREADY
The book was okay. It held my interest for the most part. A bit slow moving and parochial at times. Who cares how much/how loud her mother farts or that she's fair skinned but part Hispanic, who cares. I thought the book would be about her growing , questioning her faith and ultimately moving on from this faith that seems to hold her back on so many levels. She found a man that she really really cared for but put that No sex thing out there because ultimately she uses it as a crutch to avoid committing. Give it up ... Read More
