Foote's narrative is a favorite of mine. 5 stars are merited for his work however, the product is troublesome. The tacky plastic blue label on the spine will come off right on your hands. I am very glad that I still have the dust jackets because these things look ugly after one read. In years to come we will see these things on the used shelf in the bookstore looking like a half scratched off lotto ticket. You'll be lucky if you can still read the title. Obviously I have not read the entire treatise yet; however, the first volume is quiet complete, well written, easily read. The people of the era come alive. I can just hear A. Lincoln saying, "Mr. Cheeerman!" Very pleased with this purchase.

Foote is justly admired for captivating narration. His lack of notes and references allows generalizations that are not always warranted.
His pro-Southern bias is well recognized, and his defence of Jefferson Davis requires no refutation. One will find malicious comments about U. S. generals such as Grant and Sherman but nothing of the sort about Lee or Jackson, despite the latter's fanaticism. Paperbound edition makes changes that do not seem acknowledged.
