Editorial Review:

Product Description:

The first edition of The New Cold War was published to great critical acclaim and Edward Lucas has established himself as a top expert in the field, appearing on numerous programs, including Lou Dobbs, MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, CNN, and NPR.

In this new revised and updated edition, Lucas reveals:
-The truth about the corrupt elections that made Dmitri Medvedev President of Russia
-How, as prime minister, Vladimir Putin remains the de facto leader of Russia
-The Kremlin's real goals in waging war in Georgia;
-How the conflict might soon spill into other former Soviet republics.

Hard-hitting and powerful, The New Cold War is a sobering look at Russia's current aggression and what it means for the world.

Book Description:

In late 1999 when Vladimir Putin was named Prime Minister, Russia was a budding democracy. Multiple parties campaigned for seats in the Duma, the nation’s parliament. The media criticized the government freely. Eight years later as Putin completes his second term as president of Russia and announces his bid for prime minister, the country is under a repressive regime. Human rights abuses are widespread. The Kremlin is openly hostile to the West. Yet the United States and Europe have been slow to confront the new reality, in effect, helping Russia win what experts are now calling the New Cold War.

Edward Lucas, former Moscow Bureau Chief for The Economist, offers a harrowing portrait from inside Russia as well as a sobering political assessment of what the New Cold War will mean for the world. In this big, hard hitting and urgently needed book, he shows how

* Russia is pursuing global energy markets
* Neighboring nations are being coerced back into the former Soviet orbit
* Journalists and dissidents are being silenced
* Foreign investments and private enterprises are routinely defrauded
* Putin is laying the groundwork for controlling industry and planning his new role as prime minister

Drawing on new and hitherto reported material, The New Cold War brilliantly anticipates what is in store for the new Russia and what the world should be doing.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A rushed collection of blogs
The arguments in the book are actually not arguments: they are a collection of name calling, branding, and bumper-sticker slogans. Lucas successfully revives the worst of the Cold War journalism and applies it in a hurry to Russia. It is apparent from this collection of assertions, assumptions, and plain bias, that Lucas doesn't like Russia or the Russians. One suspects a possible case of the "small nation syndrome", made more acute by Russian recovery under Putin. Yet, though Russia is dangerous, ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Informative, but rather dull
Lots of good information about life and internal Russian political interests. Author makes many good points, provided
of course that you can get through the dull narrative text.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An interesting and informative read, but not quite what the title implies
The end of the Cold War has been one of the watershed moments of the twentieth century. The tension between the Soviet Union and its allies on one hand, and the Western capitalist democracies on the other, has completely dominated all of international relations for almost half a century. The collapse of the Soviet Union had spurred hopes that the days of bipolar world and the constant threat of total nuclear holocaust are finally behind us. For some time it looked that Russia and a myriad other post ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Cold Reality
I highly recommend The New Cold War for anyone studying the mind-set of Russian political decision making. This book demonstrates that no matter who holds the reins of power, whether it be the czars, Communists, or post-Communists elite, the Russian bear continues to move in the same manner.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - New Cold War
This book will definatley open your eyes! I thought since the USSR collapsed that Russia wasn't much of a threat to anyone really. I guess I was just ignorant but this book opened my mind to what is really going on. It used to be the cold war was in my fathers era but I really can see the new cold war in full effect in my time.
